Mandelic Acid Peels

What are they and what do they do

Mandelic acid peels are a type of peel belonging to the glycolic acid peel family or AHA peels. It is an aromatic peel first discovered by the German chemist Ferdinand Ludwig Winkler. The skin peel is generally mild due to the large molecular structure which allows for a minimal penetration of the skin. It is therefore a goto peel for the treatment of sensitive and damaged skins including for the treatment of rosacea.

The mandelic peel has an antibacterial property and was initially used as an oral antibiotic. It is therefore a good choice for those suffering from acne.

Generally the mandelic acid is available in different strengths from 20% to 50% concentrations.

The peel helps to:

 o Exfoliate the skin

 o Improve skin tone

o Enhance dark marks or pigmentation

 o Treat acne

 o Treat back heads

 o Improve photodamaged skin

o And improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What happens during a treatment.

Before the mandelic acid peel is applied, the skin is cleansed and then a toner is applied to clean the skin further of its natural oils. This degreasing process ensures that the peel is effective on the skin.  Once the skin peel is applied using gentle brush strokes it is left on the skin from anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes.

Generally speaking you do not feel any sensation. However, after 5 mins the peel starts to feel warm with mild tingling. The skin will begin to turn pink or blushed but not crimson red. Once the neutralising solution is applied to remove the peeling solution from your skin you may find that the skin feels more irritated.  Once the moisturizing cream is applied your skin feels normal.

Normally mandelic peels do not cause the classic skin peeling off effect as the peel is mild. However, the effects of the peel are nonetheless taking place. You should not use any scrubs or active creams for the first week.  A good sunscreen and specialised post-peel creams are recommended.

Is there any downtime

Generally allow 2 to 3 days for the skin to repair.  Whilst the peel can be considered a lunch time peel it is best to have the weekend to let the skin rest and receive to benefit from the full effects of the peel.

When will you see results

You will notice an immediate improve of your skin which progresses for a week.  Your skin will be smoother, brighter and more supple.  Improvements continue with a course of peels.  For acne and pigmentation a course of peels is recommended before you see any improvement. If tolerated peels every 2 weeks is beneficial.

Mandelic acid peels are a great peel with strong results without much downtime.
