South Kensington, by Santi

What to see, eat, book and enjoy around SW7 — written by a clinic that has been on Thurloe Street since 2009.

The museums and landmarks stay. The recommendations at the top change every week.

Why SW7 looks like this

From farmland to London’s culture quarter

The Great Exhibition of 1851 helped transform this once-rural area into an extraordinary concentration of museums, education, music and residential London.

That legacy is why the V&A, Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Royal Albert Hall and Imperial College all sit within a compact walk.

Look for:

  • Victorian terracotta and museum architecture
  • The changing geometry around Thurloe Square and the Underground cutting
  • Exhibition Road’s shared-space streetscape
  • The transition from museum district to garden squares within minutes

Culture on our doorstep

Four institutions worth building a day around

Victoria & Albert Museum

Design, fashion, decorative arts and major exhibitions. Our first choice if you have time for one museum.

Natural History Museum

The building alone is worth the walk, particularly when there is a major temporary exhibition.

Science Museum

The best if you want something more interactive or are visiting with children.

Royal Albert Hall

Check what is actually on. An evening performance can turn the afternoon into a full day.

Kensington Gardens

Albert Memorial, long walks, Italian Gardens and the quickest escape from museum crowds.

Exhibition Road

The spine connecting station, museums, Imperial College, Albert Hall and the park.

Eat & drink

A neighbourhood to taste

Some are in SW7, others are deliberately a short walk beyond it. That is how we actually use the area.

Coffee, chocolate & pastry

Venchi chocolatier South Kensington
Venchi — chocolate, gelato and an easy stop on the move.
Venchi South Kensington interior
Venchi inside — usually difficult to walk past without buying something.
Philippe Conticini patisserie South Kensington
Philippe Conticini — French pastry worth stopping for.

Dinner

Hawksmoor Knightsbridge — reliable when you want steak and a proper dinner.
Bibendum Michelin House
Bibendum — Michelin House is worth seeing even before you decide where to eat.
Josephine restaurant
Josephine — French comfort food when you are happy to go a little further west.
Sadaf Persian restaurant Kensington
Sadaf — generous Persian food, excellent bread and an easy-going room.

Drinks, hotels & less obvious stops

Home House — an occasional London detour for a quieter drink.
The Kensington Hotel — calm, comfortable and easy for an early evening drink.
Akira Back — dramatic interiors and a more theatrical evening.
Five Guys South Kensington — because not every recommendation needs to be elaborate.
