Why skin pH matters
The acid mantle (typically pH ~4.5–6) supports enzyme activity for barrier renewal and helps keep the microbiome in balance. When pH drifts higher, irritation and dryness are more likely; when too low, tolerance to actives may suffer.
What shifts pH
- Alkaline cleansers or frequent water-only rinsing
- Over-exfoliation or stacking strong actives
- Environmental stress (UV, pollution, cold/dry air)
- Ageing and barrier impairment
How we measure it
We use a calibrated skin-surface pH meter under standardised conditions (site, timing, cleansing status). Multiple facial sites are averaged for consistency and interpreted alongside TEWL, hydration and sebum.
FAQs
What is an “ideal” skin pH?
Most facial skin performs well between roughly 4.5 and 6. We look for stability rather than chasing a single number.
Should cleansers be “pH balanced”?
Mild, slightly acidic cleansers tend to be better tolerated. We’ll match cleanser type to your pH pattern and barrier tolerance.
How often should I recheck pH?
At new-routine start and again at 6–12 weeks, then less often once stable or when you change actives/seasons.
