Botox – what you need to know

What is Botox?

Botox® is the trade name for Botulinum Toxin, made by Allergan. Botox has been used for treating wrinkles since the 1990s and is the most common cosmetic procedure in the world. The effects of injecting Botox were first discovered by Canadian doctors, a husband and wife team who were using it to treat strabismus, orcrossed eyes. When they discovered the end result included an improvement in facial wrinkles, Botox® was born.

What happens during the procedure?

After a thorough consultation regarding your specific requirements we will advise you on facial symmetry and the dynamics of facial muscles. This will make you better aware of the results that can be achieved. Our approach is always gentle, and our policy is not to over-treat. Onceyou are happy with the results we can enhance the treatment protocol upon future visits. Please allow 45 minutes if this is your first visit and 30 minutes for follow up appointments.

What are the side effects or risks?

Side effects are rare, but some clients may experience redness or bruising at the injection site. Occasionally the area might temporarily ache.

What results can I typically expect?

It usually takes between 5 and 10 daysfor the full effect of Botox treatment to become visible. You are welcome to come in for a further top-up treatment around the 10-day mark at our clinic in Chelsea. After that you will typically come in every 3 to 4 months for further treatments. To maintain the effect of Botox we strongly recommend skin peels or laser light treatments to enhance the appearance of the skin further.

Botox Aftercare

You can return to normal activities immediately but avoid rubbing the treated area or lying down flat in the initial 4 hours after Botox treatment.

OUR BOTOX TREATMENTS

Frown Lines

When administered to lined or furrowed areas on the forehead, Botox relaxes the facial muscles and smooths the skin. It can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and dynamic wrinkles – and provide a defined eyebrow arch.

Dynamic wrinkles are the creases in the skin that are caused by underlying muscle movement, e.g. frown lines. These creases are part of our facial physiognomy and in youth disappear when the face is at rest. Later, often from the mid to late twenties, these creases begin to persist and become typical ageing flags like furrowed frown lines, glabellar lines between the eyebrows and crow’s feet.

Interesting Fact

While most people associate it with cosmetic uses, some researchers have found that by injecting Botox into the frown muscles (the glabellar region between the eyebrows), it can actually improve mood. The theory is based on something called the “facial feedback hypothesis,” which suggests that the facial expressions we make can influence our emotions.

By relaxing the muscles responsible for frowning, Botox can potentially reduce the negative feedback loop between facial expressions and emotions, helping to alleviate depressive symptoms. Though it’s still an area of ongoing research, some clinical trials have shown promising results in reducing symptoms of depression, offering an intriguing potential future use of Botox beyond its traditional roles.

Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterised by excessive or abnormal sweating. Excess or drip sweating is most common under-arms but it can also occur on the extremities – soles of the feet and palms of the hands – as well as the face.

Botox has been approved as a treatment for severe under-arm hyperhidrosis when prescription anti-perspirants have failed. Botox works by inhibiting nerve function or interrupting communication between the brain and the sweat glands – effectively preventing perspiration. There is little if any down-time and results should be almost immediate.

Chronic Migraines

Botox has been approved for the treatment of chronic migraines since 2010. The FDA has stated that Botox injections can be effective in preventing migraines, characterised as debilitating headaches that result in intense pulsing or throbbing pains.

Migraines are also referred to as ‘sick headaches,’ as they generally occur with nausea and sensitivity to sound and light. Interestingly, Botox has only proven to be effective in chronic cases – where 14 or more migraines occur over a month. In these instances, Botox injected into the head and neck every three months can prevent the onset of migraines altogether – alleviating a profoundly disabling condition.

Teeth Grinding and Botox

Less well known but demonstrably effective is the use of botox for teeth grinding also known as Bruxism. Read more about botox and teeth grinding here.

Botox Neck Line Lift

A clever more advanced treatment can offer a mild lift of neck lines using Botox. Whilst the result changes are subtle it can act as an effective combination treatment with radiofrequency. Read more about Botox Neck Lift here.

Your Botox Questions Answered

Queen of cosmetic procedures, Botox is the world’s best-known wrinkle-relaxing treatment. Injections can smooth frown lines and crow’s feet, ameliorate looks of fatigue or stress, and generally restore a youthful demeanour to the face. It’s not only administered for visible results though; many rely on Botox to treat chronic migraines, excessive sweating and teeth grinding. But whether for aesthetic purposes or not, Botox can provide an injection of confidence as much as anything else which – for many – is priceless.

When it comes to facial treatments, it pays to see a venerable injector with extensive experience alongside an artistic eye. A light touch can be most effective, and often the best results won’t reveal that you’ve had Botox at all.

Can you get Botox that looks natural?

Indeed – we believe Botox should look natural. Yes, injections temporarily paralyse muscles, but that frozen-faced image often associated with Botox signals that a treatment was overdone.

Dr. Yazan Ajam, plastic surgeon and aesthetic injector at Santi, echoes that “the key to administering natural-looking Botox is to go to a highly qualified and experienced doctor who has a deep knowledge of facial anatomy, and a wealth of experience in treating wrinkles with Botox”. In particular, he explains that plastic surgeons are a very safe option given that “they have a deeply nuanced understanding of facial aesthetics”.

No one wants to look expressionless like an immobile doll, but rather fresh-faced and well-rested. It’s not about chasing ‘perfection’ but feeling like the best version of you, and many find Botox an ideal way to achieve that goal.

What are the best alternatives to Botox?

Often, facial filler can be a superior solution for certain anti-ageing concerns. Everybody’s face is different – and should be treated so – but, for example, a hollowing of the eyes (which can enhance one’s crow’s feet) could be remedied by tear trough filler. Or, for nasolabial creases (from the bottom of the nose to the corners of the mouth), filler in the cheeks can lift the skin while restoring structure to the face.

For improved elasticity overall, plus an incandescent glow, look to Profhilo. Unlike traditional fillers this new-generation hyaluronic acid-based treatment is all about adding hydration over volume, and it provides long-term benefits for the condition of the skin.

Want an alternative to injectables? A course of facial treatments such as microneedling and radiofrequency can help to smooth, firm and plump the skin while stimulating further collagen to be produced.

Active skincare ingredients, such as retinol, can too be effective at managing the skin’s texture. When used consistently (alongside diligent SPF application during the daytime) you can expect to see a modest smoothing of your lines.

However, when talking significant wrinkle reduction, Botox reigns supreme at granting true visible results. Little else will minimise the appearance of dynamic wrinkles (those that are seen when the face is at rest) or help delay their formation by preventing muscles contraction in ways that deepen lines in the first place.

Is it ever ‘too late’ for Botox?

It is never too late to start Botox for aesthetic reasons, however, Dr. Ajam explains that “you will get a better outcome if you treat wrinkles at an earlier stage than to leave them until they’ve become well established”.

Indeed, Botox can be used preventatively, at the first sign of lines appearing. This approach will relax the facial muscles, restricting movements that leads to dynamic wrinkles forming. For some people this might be best to do in their late 20s, and for others in their 30s.

How much is Botox?

Cheap wrinkle-relaxing treatments are cut-price for a reason: inexperienced practitioners can make mistakes that are not only unattractive, but dangerous – so avoid the temptation.

At Santi, as one of London’s leading Botox clinics, a consultation and possible treatment costs from £220. Rest assured you’ll be seen by an expert with extensive Botox experience and glowing reviews.

Who shouldn't have Botox?

Most people are able candidates for a Botox treatment, but expectant and nursing mothers should avoid all cosmetic interventions, Dr. Ajam confirms.

“Those who have had Botox in the past and have experienced symptoms of allergy or hypersensitivity should also avoid treatments,” he adds. “As should anyone who suffers with certain neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.”

What happens if you don't maintain Botox?

Botox is not permanent, and treatments usually lasts between three to six months before results gradually diminish.

If you don’t maintain Botox injections, “you will generally revert back to your pre-injection level of muscle activity and therefore the wrinkles will reappear,” explains Dr. Ajam.

During your consultation you will be able to discuss a long-term treatment plan with advice on how regularly you might require repeat appointments. As with any cosmetic enhancement, Botox should be truly bespoke – considering both your looks and lifestyle.

Can you fly after Botox Treatment?

It is generally safe to fly after receiving Botox injections. However, it is always best to consult with us at Santi  before making any travel plans after receiving a medical treatment. We may have additional recommendations or precautions based on your individual situation.

Can zinc supplement really extend the durability of a Botox treatment?

There is currently no scientific evidence to suggest that taking zinc supplements can extend the durability of a Botox treatment. Botox, or botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin that is used to temporarily paralyze muscles in order to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Its effects are primarily localized to the muscles at the injection site and do not typically involve systemic factors like zinc levels.

The effectiveness and duration of Botox treatments are influenced by several factors, including the individual’s metabolism, the specific muscles being treated, the dose of Botox administered, and the skill of the injector. While there are various strategies and recommendations for optimizing the results of Botox treatments, such as avoiding excessive sun exposure and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, there is no established connection between zinc supplementation and Botox treatment outcomes.

Botox vs. Other Cosmetic Treatments: Which is Right for You?

Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment that is used to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines on the face. However, it’s not the only option when it comes to rejuvenating your appearance. There are several other cosmetic treatments that can achieve similar results, including dermal fillers and chemical peels. So, which treatment is right for you? Let’s take a closer look at Botox vs. other cosmetic treatments.

Botox

Botox is a brand name for a type of injectable neurotoxin called botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles, Botox blocks the nerve signals that cause the muscles to contract. This can smooth out wrinkles and fine lines on the face, particularly in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes.

Botox is a popular choice for people who want a quick, non-surgical solution to wrinkles and fine lines. The treatment is relatively painless and requires no downtime, making it a convenient option for busy individuals.

However, Botox is not a permanent solution. The effects typically last for 3-6 months, after which you will need to have another treatment to maintain your results. Additionally, Botox is not effective for all types of wrinkles, particularly those caused by sun damage or loss of skin elasticity.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable gels that are used to add volume to the face and smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. There are several different types of fillers, including hyaluronic acid fillers and collagen fillers.

Dermal fillers can be used to treat a wide range of wrinkles and fine lines, including nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and vertical lip lines. They can also be used to add volume to the cheeks and lips, and to contour the jawline.

Dermal fillers typically last longer than Botox, with results that can last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type of filler used. However, like Botox, dermal fillers are not permanent, and you will need to have additional treatments to maintain your results.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are a type of skin resurfacing treatment that uses a chemical solution to remove the outer layers of skin. This can improve the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone and texture.

Chemical peels come in different strengths, from mild peels that require no downtime to deeper peels that can take several weeks to heal. The type of peel you choose will depend on your skin type and the severity of your concerns.

Chemical peels can be an effective option for people who want to improve the overall appearance of their skin, rather than targeting specific wrinkles or fine lines. However, they can be more invasive than injectable treatments like Botox and dermal fillers, and may require more downtime.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

So, which treatment is right for you? The answer will depend on several factors, including your age, skin type, and the severity of your wrinkles and fine lines.

Botox may be a good option if you are looking for a quick and convenient solution to wrinkles and fine lines, particularly in the upper face. Dermal fillers may be a better choice if you are looking to add volume to the face, contour the jawline, or smooth out deeper wrinkles and folds. Chemical peels may be a good option if you are looking to improve the overall texture and tone of your skin, rather than targeting specific wrinkles and fine lines.

Ultimately, the best way to determine which treatment is right for you is to consult with a qualified cosmetic practitioner. They can assess your individual concerns and recommend a personalized treatment plan that will help you achieve.

What Causes an Eyebrow Droop After Botox

Botox injections can cause eyebrow droop or eyelid droop if the botulinum toxin spreads beyond the intended treatment area. This can happen if the injection is placed too close to the brow or eyelid muscle, or if too much Botox is injected.

Eyebrow droop can also occur if the frontalis muscle, which is responsible for raising the eyebrows, is over-treated with Botox. When this muscle is weakened, the muscles that pull the eyebrows down may become more dominant, causing the eyebrows to droop.

Other factors that can contribute to eyebrow droop after Botox include individual differences in anatomy, the amount and concentration of Botox used, and the skill and experience of the injector.

If you experience eyebrow droop after Botox, it is important to contact your injector as soon as possible. They may be able to adjust the injection or provide other treatments to help improve the appearance of your eyebrows. In most cases, eyebrow droop after Botox is temporary and will resolve on its own as the effects of the treatment wear off.

Interested in the Botox Lip Flip? Here are 5 things you need to know.

What is Botox Lip Flip?

Botox Lip Flip is a cosmetic procedure that uses Botox injections to create a fuller appearance of the upper lip. It involves injecting small amounts of Botox into the upper lip to relax the muscles and allow the lip to roll slightly upward. This results in a more prominent and defined upper lip.

How is it different from lip fillers?

Botox Lip Flip is different from lip fillers, which involve injecting a substance such as hyaluronic acid into the lips to add volume. Botox Lip Flip only affects the upper lip and does not add any volume. It simply enhances the natural shape of the lip by relaxing the muscles.

How long does it last?

Botox Lip Flip typically lasts for around 2-3 months. However, the duration may vary depending on the individual’s metabolism and the amount of Botox used.

What are the side effects?

Botox Lip Flip is a relatively safe procedure, but there may be some side effects. These may include redness, swelling, bruising, or tenderness around the injection site. In rare cases, patients may experience drooping of the upper lip, but this usually resolves on its own within a few weeks.

Who is a good candidate for Botox Lip Flip?

Botox Lip Flip is best suited for patients who have thin upper lips and are looking for a subtle enhancement. It may not be suitable for individuals who already have full lips or those with a history of allergic reactions to Botox. It’s important to consult with a qualified cosmetic practitioner to determine if Botox Lip Flip is the right option for you.

Botox – Can Botox help undereye wrinkles?

Yes, Botox can help reduce the appearance of under-eye wrinkles. Botox, which is derived from the botulinum toxin, is a popular cosmetic treatment used to temporarily relax the muscles responsible for causing wrinkles. While it is commonly associated with treating forehead lines and crow’s feet, Botox can also be used to address under-eye wrinkles, also known as “smile lines” or “laugh lines.”

Under-eye wrinkles typically occur due to repetitive muscle movements, such as smiling or squinting, as well as natural aging and a loss of collagen and elasticity in the skin. Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles, preventing them from contracting. This temporary muscle relaxation can help smooth out the wrinkles and reduce their appearance.

It’s important to note that under-eye wrinkles can have various causes, including volume loss, skin laxity, and pigmentation issues. Botox specifically targets wrinkles caused by muscle contractions, so it may not be effective for all types of under-eye wrinkles. In some cases, a combination of treatments like dermal fillers or laser resurfacing may be recommended for optimal results.

If you’re considering Botox for under-eye wrinkles, it’s best to consult with a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon. They can assess your specific concerns, determine the most suitable treatment approach, and discuss potential risks and benefits with you.

The concept of the Golden Ratio

Often referred to as Phi (φ), has been historically associated with aesthetics and beauty, including in the context of the human face. The Golden Ratio is a mathematical proportion (approximately 1.618) that is believed to represent a sense of harmony, balance, and beauty. It appears in various aspects of art, architecture, and nature.

In the context of the human face, some proponents of the Golden Ratio argue that facial features that adhere to these proportions are perceived as more attractive. For example, they suggest that certain ideal measurements, such as the distance between the eyes, the width of the nose, and the length of the face, should conform to the Golden Ratio.

However, it’s important to approach this concept with caution and an understanding of its limitations:

Subjectivity: Beauty is highly subjective and influenced by cultural, societal, and personal factors. What is considered attractive can vary widely among different individuals and cultures.

Diversity: Human faces are incredibly diverse, and there is no single “ideal” or universally beautiful face. Different cultures and time periods have had varying beauty standards.

Limited Scientific Evidence: While the Golden Ratio is often mentioned in discussions of facial aesthetics, scientific research on its direct correlation with facial attractiveness is limited and inconclusive. Beauty perception is influenced by numerous factors, including symmetry, averageness, and cultural ideals.

Individual Variation: Attractiveness is influenced by the overall harmony and balance of facial features, but these proportions can vary from person to person. What is considered beautiful in one individual may not apply to another.

Psychological Factors: Factors like personality, charisma, and emotional expressions also play a significant role in how we perceive someone’s attractiveness. These factors go beyond facial proportions.

Ethical Considerations: Overemphasis on specific proportions or ideals can lead to unrealistic beauty standards and potentially contribute to body image issues and low self-esteem.

In summary, while the Golden Ratio is an intriguing concept and may have some relevance in discussions of beauty and aesthetics, it should be viewed as just one of many factors that contribute to an individual’s perception of attractiveness. Beauty is diverse, subjective, and influenced by numerous complex factors, and there is no one-size-fits-all definition of what makes a face beautiful.

Botox Alternatives: Daxxify

A new alternative to Botox, Daxxify, has gained FDA approval and is generating significant interest due to its longer-lasting effects. Clinical trials have shown that Daxxify can smooth wrinkles for up to six to nine months, compared to the typical three to four months for Botox. This longer duration means fewer injections are needed, potentially reducing the frequency of visits to the dermatologist. However, due to its prolonged effect, it is recommended for patients who have an established relationship with their injector and are confident in their treatment patterns.

In London, Santi London offers expert consultation and administration of Botox and other neuromodulators like Daxxify. Their team of licensed professionals ensures that all treatments are conducted in a safe, medical setting, providing peace of mind to clients concerned about the risks of counterfeit products. For those seeking alternatives to Botox, Santi London’s experienced practitioners can help determine if Daxxify is the right choice based on individual needs and preferences.
