Nutritional Therapy
WHAT IS NUTRITIONAL THERAPY
Nutritional therapy is a health promoting therapy that focuses on using food, nutrients, lifestyle changes and supplements to address health problems. Nutrition focuses on healthy, regular function of individual organs and systems, such as the digestive and immune systems, but more importantly on the body as a whole.
Implementing healthy function of the whole body, also known as wellness, can impact on everything from the way you look, the amount of energy you have, PMS, sleep patterns, concentration, food cravings, weight management and the ability to conceive and carry a child, amongst many, many, other things. Food provides energy and basic building blocks for every single process in the body. In each of the roughly 60 trillion cells in your body, thousands of chemical reactions take place every day in order for that cell to function. Specific enzymes drive each of these reactions, and each enzyme requires specific vitamins and minerals to function. Low levels (or high levels for that matter) of just a single nutrient, is enough to affect the way you feel, behave or perform, because of the hundreds and thousands of cellular processes that depend on it.
Nutritional Therapy helps to provide the foundation of good health, but doesn’t seek to cure illness. Nutrition is often at the heart of a program that may include stress management, physical activity, traditional medicine, and other comprehensive therapies such as chiropractic care, physiotherapy and counselling. Nutrition is a very powerful tool, and making positive change to what and how you eat can yield can transform your health.
A nutrition consultation is usually divided into 3 general parts.
The first part is gathering information about the individual and their life and history. This usually involves taking a comprehensive medical history, and discussing food, stress, previous illnesses, family illness and details of symptoms and diagnoses.
Secondly, the nutritionist and the client together, explore the connections between the symptoms or diagnosis and the contributing factors, triggers and mediators, to better understand what has gone wrong biologically and biochemically, that has led to this specific person, having these specific problems. A broad range of tests may be used to further ascertain underlying contributing factors. Some of these will be available on the NHS and performed in conjunction with the client’s GP, and independent, private laboratories may perform others. Finally, a personalised intervention program is put together that is specific to the individuals’ health, symptoms and lifestyle. This often incorporates nutritional supplementation, physical activity, sleep and stress management, but always contains dietary intervention at it’s core.
